Project Overview
What is planned for this project?
The Minnesota Department of Transportation is making improvements to approximately 11 miles of Highway 68, from North Grant Street in Minneota to the Redwood River Marshall, including drainage improvements and shoulder widening. Drainage improvements near Porter are also included in the project. Construction was originally scheduled to begin in 2021 but has been rescheduled to begin spring 2022. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2022. Traffic will be detoured during different construction stages.

Wider Shoulders on Highway 68
What changes will people see?
Highway 68 is currently 32 feet wide, with 4 foot paved shoulders and 12 foot drive lanes. After construction is complete, Highway 68 will have wider shoulders between Minneota and Marshall. This will be accomplished by adding 4 feet of gravel on each side.

Video description: The shoulder widening portion of the project will stretch from North Grant Street in Minneota to the Redwood River in Marshall. Five culverts will be replaced throughout the project area: three near Porter, one south of Minneota, and one south of Ghent. There will be three detours in place throughout the project.
During the shoulder widening between Minneota and Marshall, a detour route will be in place on County Road 19 and County Road 3. Access to Ghent during the shoulder widening will be provided on County Road 5. During culvert replacement along Hwy 68 north of Porter, a detour route will be in place on County Road 20 and Hwy 75. While the culvert south of Porter is being replaced, a detour route will direct traffic to County Road 8, County Road 19, and County Road 7. The two culvert replacement detours around Porter will not operate at the same time.
Travel Information
Highway 68 will be closed to traffic between Marshall and Minneota during shoulder widening construction
- Detour uses County Road 19 and County Road 3
- Travelers will use County Road 19 and County Road 5 to access Ghent during this time
There will be detours along Highway 68 during culvert work
Signage will be in place directing travelers around the construction
Project Location

This project extends from Canby through Porter, Taunton, Minneota, Ghent, and Marshall. Check out each of the five embedded map images below for a more detailed view of the project construction impacts.
Project-wide notes
- Driveway and field entrances will be replaced one-half at a time so land owners will continue to have access to their properties. The driveway entrances are being replaced to accommodate the shoulder widening along Hwy 68.
- Major culvert replacements will cause a complete closure of Hwy 68. Duration of these closures is yet to be determined. Detours will be in place directing traffic around the construction areas.
