Project History
Beginning in 2018, ACHD developed the Kootenai Street Concept Study in response to a neighborhood resident petition to investigate potential Traffic Calming improvements on Kootenai Street between Orchard Street and Vista Avenue.
The purpose of the study was to work with the neighborhood to consider various traffic calming measures and develop a conceptual plan of the appropriate treatments that preserved and enhanced the neighborhood while creating a more pedestrian and bicycle friendly environment.
Input was received from:
- Neighborhood residents
- Depot Bench Neighborhood Association
- People who drive, walk and bike along Kootenai Street
- City of Boise
- ACHD
Based on input from the public, the recommended concepts included:
- Narrow vehicle lanes from 11-feet to 10-feet
- Chicanes
- A chicane is a shallow S-shaped turn that requires drivers to turn slightly left and then right to stay on the road, causing motorists to slow down. Visit the project site for an in depth look at chicanes.
- Bulb-outs
- Bulb-outs extend the sidewalk and curb, reducing crossing distance for pedestrians. Visit the project site for an in depth look at bulb-outs.
- Sidewalk replacing parking lanes
- RRFBs (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons) for school crossing at Johnson Street
- RRFBs function as a warning beacon at pedestrian crossings. Visit the project site for an in depth look at RRFBs.
The ACHD Commission adopted the Kootenai Street Traffic Calming Study in January 2019. View the full report.
