About the Safety Plans

South Dakota DOT

TRAFFIC SAFETY HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS

To address today’s safety issues, a coordinated, multi-agency, strategic safety planning approach is required.

As part of a statewide-coordinated effort to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads, SDDOT is updating the Strategic Highway Safety Plan and developing a Highway-Rail Safety Plan. The SHSP focuses on the state's traffic safety programs, identifying programs and countermeasures that include all 4 Es of highway safety: engineering, education, enforcement, and emergency medical services. The HRSP focuses on improving safety at highway-rail grade crossings.

82,576 miles of roadway
1,800+ At-grade crossings
522 Serious Injury Crashes (2017)
111 Fatal Crashes (2017)

Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP)

The SHSP helps identify safety emphasis areas and strategies to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes throughout the state.

Highway-Rail Safety Plan (HRSP)

The HRSP will help SDDOT to improve safety at highway-rail grade crossings through robust analysis of traffic and safety data and collaborative coordination with railroad and public agency stakeholders and the public.
